The Coronado Community Foundation Is Making A Difference

Since its launch a few months ago, the Exceptional Families Program has held three events: Earth Day in the Coronado Cays (pictured above), family picnic day at the Rady Shell, and a meet-up at the Promenade Concert. The impact is already being felt. CCF is actively seeking donations from the community to ensure the Exceptional Families Program can be expanded and sustained.

The Coronado Community Foundation (CCF) is hard at work this year with the launch of the Exceptional Families Program. With the support and leadership from CCF, the program is a collaboration with Camp Able, the Coronado library and other local agencies to provide year-round, no-cost enrichment events for special needs families.

The Exceptional Families Program offers monthly local activities and events for both the caregivers, as well as the special needs family members. The whole family can engage in fun-filled and enriching activities throughout the year. This has been a dream of Jenelle Nettles, Director of Camp Able, a summer beach camp for children and adults with special needs in Coronado for the last 42 years. “Our partnership with CCF is allowing us to expand our outreach to more local families and provide year-round activities,” said Nettle.

Helen Kupka, Chair of CCF added, “Through our philanthropic efforts, we build the capacity of local nonprofits serving the Coronado community. This type of partnership is central to the purpose of CCF as a convener and collaborator and helps to establish CCF as a leading philanthropic organization in Coronado.”

One father said that they do not get out often as both children have special needs, and his wife has advanced MS. He said, “This event was also very special on its own. We could come as ONE family.” It meant a lot for them to watch the Camp Able staff help their children during the activities. He went on to add, “As I sat there with my wife, I literally had tears on the inside as this life is not easy sometimes but today, I was somewhat spoiled.”

“Building philanthropy, building community for a thriving Coronado” is the vision of the Coronado Community Foundation. Since its inception in 2021, CCF is committed to that vision by providing cross-sector leadership and philanthropy to ensure Coronado remains a vibrant community for all.
