CAMP ABLE CORONADO
The Coronado Community Foundation, in collaboration with Camp Able and several other local organizations is in the process of developing programs for families with family members with special needs.
In Coronado, there are very few outlets for these families to access stimulating engagement programs or respite services for family caregivers. Currently, the Navy assigns many special needs families to San Diego. As a result, there are many students who qualify for special needs services both inside and outside of our school system.
Developing these programs in Coronado proper is important as it reduces the commute and burden on caregivers who are in need of respite but who also must be able to respond quickly in case of emergency. The goal is to develop programming that does not rely on “parent-burdened administration” and allows families to entrust care, respite, and experiences for family members.
In addition, we have learned that there are a great number of families with family members who have aged out of school systems/school-age programming, or are in post-school transition and need support to fill the gap in enrichment, learning, respite, community-building, and employment support.
Our Collaboration:
The Coronado Community Foundation (CCF) identifies unaddressed community needs, connects community members, facilitates the funding and initiation of projects, and evaluates the results to ensure effective use of resources and sustainable programs. By building the collaboration and raising the necessary funds, CCF intends to facilitate the launch of these programs in March of 2024.

Camp Able is a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of the disabled community through their summer camps here in Coronado. For 42 years, Camp Able has provided a safe and compassionate experience to campers of all ages and disabilities. Expanding their offerings year-round has long been their dream.
