ABOUT

LOCAL. RESPONSIVE. MINDFUL.

WE ARE THE CORONADO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

The Coronado Community Foundation was established in Coronado for Coronado by a steering committee comprised of local residents interested in ensuring a vital future for our community.  The idea for the formation of the foundation first came as a recommendation from the Strategic Plan for Arts and Culture which was accepted by the City Council in 2019.  First conceived as a vehicle to support our arts and culture institutions, it became apparent to the committee that a Community Foundation dedicated to preserving and enhancing all aspects of Coronado was the right direction.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY FOUNDATION?

A community foundation is a tax exempt, nonprofit, autonomous, nonsectarian philanthropic institution supported by individuals, families and businesses with long-term goals of:

BUILDING

permanent, component funds established by a broad base of community members to carry out charitable interests

SUPPORTING

broad-based charitable interests and benefitting the residents of a defined geographic area.

SERVING

in leadership roles on important community issues.

Community foundations play a key role in identifying and solving community problems.  They share the common goal of serving donors, nonprofit organizations and communities as a whole.  One of a community foundation’s special functions is to provide effective leadership and to coordinate the needs and services in its communities so that charitable gifts are used effectively.

CORONADO NEEDS DONORS NOW AND IN THE FUTURE

Strengthen the quality of life in our coastal village by becoming a donor to the Coronado Community Foundation.  Together, we will maintain the lovely atmosphere and generous vitality of our small city while investing in its continual improvement.

The Board and Staff of the CCF will help you donate confidently by working with you to identify the most effective ways for positive philanthropic impact.  We know philanthropy is personal and every donor has unique reasons for giving.  CCF provides personal service to help you connect to support a cause or a specific organization.

Philanthropy has no timeline.  You can give now or gift part of your estate to create a legacy for the future.  Endowment funds ensure you will make an impact for generations to come.  Grants are gifted in perpetuity using the annual income, while the principal gift remains intact.  You can also elect to grant all assets at-will through non-endowment funds to support programs immediately.

GIVING COMES IN ALL SIZES AND VARIETIES

A NOTE FROM HELEN:

"When I arrived in Coronado in 2010, I was entranced with the beauty and setting of the town and it's proximity to the greater San Diego area with all that it has to offer.  It didn't take long, however, for me to recognize the character of the town and to know that I had found my "forever home".  Drawn in by the culture of giving back to the community, I have enjoyed volunteering in many roles, including work in tutoring at Monarch School in Barrio Logan, serving on the board of FOCUS and serving on the Cays HOA board of directors.  After helping with events for the Coronado 125 celebration I was asked to join the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission.  Our strategic plan called for the establishment of a foundation to support arts and culture in Coronado.  After learning more about community foundations and the roles they play in adjacent cities, it became clear that we need such a vehicle here to support all aspects of Coronado.  The word FOUNDATION means underlying basis or principle.  I believe in building that basis for our future."

DIANNE

LOOKABAUGH

SECRETARY

A NOTE FROM DIANNE:

When I moved here in 1983, my uncle, a retired Navy Captain living here told me “If you live in San Diego, you have to live in Coronado.” We took his advice, settled in, and enjoyed a 6-minute commute to work downtown San Diego.  Our children, born here, experienced life in a small town similar to my uncle’s and mine on the prairie.  They rode their bikes to school and to after-school activities, came home for lunch in high school with friends in tow, and had a caring village helping to raise them. But unlike me, they had the opportunity to try any sport or cultural activity a large city has to offer.  My uncle didn’t steer me wrong.  There are few places as unique as Coronado.

Over the years, I volunteered for the Coronado schools, in the classroom, on committees, and on the Coronado Schools Foundation board. Most of my career was spent working for not-for-profit arts organizations.  My passion has always been music and the performing arts, and I’m currently on the Board of the San Diego Performing Arts League.  I was aware of the good work of the San Diego Community Foundation, and when it was suggested that Coronado start its own foundation, I knew this would be the best place to devote both my time and dollars to ensure that this special community is supported where needed and able to develop in even more ways so that our children and grandchildren can continue to enjoy this wonderful life.  I especially hope to see Coronado’s cultural life continue to develop and thrive.

A NOTE FROM BILL:

In 2014, after a 35 year career in Arts Education as founder of the Nevada School of the Arts and President of Idyllwild Arts/founder of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, I retired to Coronado.  I was immediately impressed with the history, the scenery, the friendliness and the local services that characterize our lovely city.  In addition to enjoying lawn bowling and bicycling, I joined the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission to volunteer in support of the community.  The creation of the Coronado Community Foundation is a logical outcome of the careful planning undertaken to develop support for the continuing improvements for every aspect of life in Coronado.  We will develop needed resources that will provide a permanent source of such support.
